Chapter Eleven

TAYLOR rubbed his hands down the arms of her leather coat. “Come on, let’s get you inside and warm.”

In the apartment Taylor ditched his jacket. Stony immediately padded out of Ally’s bedroom, which seemed to be his new quarters. “Merwaor.”

“Hey, boy, need some food?” She knelt down and scratched the giant orange beast.

“I’ll feed him. Why don’t you get ready for bed, and I’ll make some herb tea to help you sleep? I’ll bet those shoes are killing you.”

“Uh, sure. That would be great.” She disappeared into her room. Stony stared after her, then up at Taylor.

“Weighing your options, fuzzball?” He walked toward the kitchen. “Come on.”

He put the tea on, gave Stony some tuna, and then changed to sweats and a T-shirt.

A few minutes later, Ally reemerged to the living room, red hair flowing, wearing her silk pajamas and some slippers they’d bought her while they were shopping. Still, she’d left on most of her makeup, and the silk clearly covered underwear. Surely she didn’t sleep like that.

She sat next to him on the couch and picked up her teacup. Stony snuggled in beside her. “I liked your friends a lot.”

“I’m glad. They liked you too.”

“You didn’t tell them anything about why we married.”

“Actually, Harry and Christopher know. They helped me form the plan. But I don’t want to tell anyone else in case my father starts snooping around.”

She blew on the tea, then sipped. “How do you think they’ll prove we’re a ‘love match’?”

“Or try to disprove it, more likely. I’m honestly not sure. Who’s going to define a love match anyway?”

She smiled. “I think it’s one of those things. You know it when you see it.”

“I guess.”

“Anything we need to practice before we go to your father’s house?” She kind of shuddered when she said it.

He stared in his cup. “Do you think we need practice kissing?”

She shrugged. “We already kissed at the wedding and at the hotel, and that didn’t kill us, so I guess we’re okay.”

That was oddly disappointing.

She set down the cup. “Stay there. I’ll be right back.”

She strode toward her room with that confident, swaying walk and disappeared, then popped out again in a minute, carrying a package wrapped in silver paper. “Happy birthday.”

“What?”

“I spent my own money on it, and as a result it’s not much.” She grinned.

“You shouldn’t be spending any money on me.”

“Open it.”

He unfolded the wrapping and opened the box. Inside was a small statue of a cat, made of red crystal with green eyes. The sitting feline looked regal and graceful—more like Ally than Stonewall. “It’s beautiful.”

“I think it’s Bastet, the Egyptian cat goddess. I figured you must like cats, since you love Stony.”

Taylor smoothed his thumb over the cool crystal. Bet Ally’s skin feels like this. “Hey, I think Stony’s your cat. This one will be mine. Thank you so much. I really love it.”

“Stony loves you best. I’m just a novelty.”

He doubted that. Who wouldn’t love Ally best?

She pointed at the statue. “What will you name it?”

He grinned.
